The leader of the current world champion stable has indicated that he does not exclude the option of signing Sebastian Vettel. Then he quickly added that for the time being, their existing team and George Russel are now the priority.
It has already been a few weeks since Scuderia Ferrari announced that it imagines the future with Carlos Sainz starting from 2021, and since then, Vettel’s situation has become a recurring topic. We do not exaggerate when we say that there are daily examples where the experts and insiders if the sport discuss the German woels champion’s possible path to Mercedes.
This speculation is based on the fact that the star brand has not yet extended its contract with either Lewis Hamilton or Valtteri Bottas. The Bavarians never denied that they would gladly give a chance to Russel and that includes the Vettel option, too.
„It was very surprising for us that the early contracts forced Scuderia Ferrari to start the season with a pilot who can no longer be involved in everything. Not only is it difficult to race but it is also extremely hard to develop skills, because after all, this is a team game. Obviously, they won’t tell any valuable information that can be passed to the rival”.
„As far as we’re concerned we’re waiting a bit longer. The priority for us right now is the duo of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas and we’ll keep one eye on George Russel as well. But never say never: we don’t rule out any pilots, so of course Sebastian Vettel is also a possibility. If I’d told you two months ago that the season would only start in July, no one would have believed me. This why I don’t want to make hasty statements now.
Before any questions, I’d like to point out that this is not just politeness. We owe to one of the best in the motorsport to take him into account. We need to rethink our options but I just want to let you know that our current duo is doing a very great job, just like our youngster at the Williams. You never know what the future will bring, and maybe one of them will suddenly announce that they don’t want to race anymore – let’s just recall Nico Rosberg’s case. I’m not going to say that Sebastian Vettel will be our racer but I’m not going to say that he doesn’t have a chance” – Toto Wolff described in detail the situation.
