According to rumors he will replace Sebastian Vettel, who won’t stay for the entire season at Ferrari. This is of course “a slight” exaggeration but there is a more realistic option, too.
Although Schumacher is not far from becoming a racer in the racing circus, he does not have well-established career yet that would justify his entry in Formula One. It is true that he won an F3 Championship with a loud bang, but others from F2 have already redeemed the world with the Prema technique used by Schumacher, too. All we have to do is to mention the names of Charles Leclerc, PIerre Gasly, or Antonio Giovinazzi and think of their results…
But let’s not be naive: with a huge PR value, an incredible connection system, and a lot of financial backing, Mick’s F1 debut is basically just a matter of time, and this moment might come even this year.
From a technical point of view, 2020 would be the best time to do this, because he would have to use his super license points required for F1 performance anyway, as part of it will run out at the end of this year.
His uncle, Ralf Schumacher, sees this as a chance, and he believes that Alpha Romeo will be waiting for him.
„Kimi Räikkönen won’be racing for long and Antonio Giovinazzi is not performing well enough in the other seat, so I think he will soon have a chance to introduce himself”.
In addition to the six-time race winner, another former F1 driver sees that the above mentioned alternative could indeed be a possible one. Specifically Nick Heidfeld believes that this jump into the deep water could happen as early as this year, in other words, we might see a Schumacher race in Formula 1 again:
„It wouldn’t be surprising at all if Mick Schumacher would show up on the track in this season. I think if he pulls himself together in F2 and performs well enough and Antonio Giovinazzi still won’t be able to step up to F1 challenges, it is quite possible that Mick would replace him. Even in the middle of the season” – made the vague statement Heidfeld
