This rumor was confirmed by Helmut Marko, who added that in case of good performance, Alexander Albon might stay. Otherwise, they will have no choice, but to choose someone outside their racing school for 2021.
Marko’s expectation are too high, yet this is matter of point of view, just like anything else:
‘Until know we chose someone from our junior program. However, currently there is no racer able to reach the level on which he could race against Max Verstappen, as teammate. Of course Yuki Tsunoda, would be an option, he is very fast, yet putting him next to Max would mean to destroy his career. Therefore, currently we are looking for an outside the box solution, to be applied if Alaxandre Albon cannot handle the pressure.
It is no surprise that that our main options are Nico Hülkenberget and Sergio Perez. The question is whether they are strong enough to race against Max. Honestly, I do not think that either of them would be able to get closer to him with more than three decimals. There are times, when Alex is able for such performance, however, should he not be able to handle the pressure implied by racing with a top team, we need to consider some alternatives. Our aim is winning the Championship and this is possible if both our racers are able to handle such challenge.’ – stated the Red Bull Racing counselor about the team’s plans for the near future.
