Last week, the idea of holding a sprint race instead of qualifying sessions (as an experiment) with the intention of making the main event more exciting exploded in the F1 community. Needless to say, not everyone is enthusiastic about this innovation. And some people would like to hack it.
According to Red Bull Racing’s top man, the vehemently protesting Mercedes just tries to protect Lewis Hamilton’s chances by making Liberty Media’s attempt impossible. Christian Horner considers Hamilton to be the biggest chance in the tournament and his team will do everything in their power to turn this chance into a victory. Even if this affects the opponents and the sport itself:
“It looked like this initiative was going through, but there was one man who was heavily protesting against it. Toto Wolff thinks if he accepts the new proposal, that would confuse Lewis Hamilton, who is apparently preparing to win the seventh World Champion title. Toto says there’s too many variables to deal with, but I think that here and now we should try some of the things we can do to make Formula One more exciting.

Sky Sports said that the Mercedes stable explained their lack of support by stating that the F1 does not need tricks to be attractive and spectacular. According to the Germans the kind of motorsport is exciting enough and high-end enough already. Horner added that it would be a very good idea to try the sprint race system during the double races, for, he argues, if only the weather doesn’t intervene, similar results can be obtained.
We also believe that in this current turmoil there won’t be any better opportunity for F1 to test their novelties. Racers are starving for a good race, they want to compete, the fans want to see races and cheer for their favorites, and under these circumstances, success is almost guaranteed. But of course this is just an opinion…
