After a long time and thanks to Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, Mercedes conquered the pole position on the first practice organized by the finally returning Formula-1.
In an ever-changing weather, but mostly on a dry ring, the Bavarian brand dominated the events – Bottas landed first, followed by Hamilton. Scuderia Ferrari had a suspiciously weak start, not so the Racing Point, in case of which Sergio Perez showed a little teaser about the presumed abilities of the pink Mercedes he was driving. McLaren, Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris had a similar start and both landed on the first six positions. Red Bull finished the practice with a few good laps, due to which Max Verstappen landed third.
The sleepy snail-paced practice’s only dynamic components were Max Verstappen’s drifting in the first turn and the contact between George Russel and Daniil Kvyat on a straight section on which Daniil Kvyat lost control.
