Toto Wolff: “We want to win at any cost, that’s why we rejected the idea of a sprint race”

As it is well known, due to Mercedes’ protest, the idea of introducing the experimental sprint race instead of the qualifying sessions was rejected. Ross Brawn revealed that Toto Wolff had not even thought about the option they outlined, he had just rejected it from the outset.

The sporting director of Formula 1 said that they wanted to try out the sprint race last year, but they were banging on closed doors:

“We wanted to test how it works but we didn’t get enough support. This year we returned to our plan, because this current situation would have been a perfect opportunity to experiment. At first it seemed like we could get permission, but again, we just couldn’t proceed with the plan, because of Mercedes’ veto.

Toto Wolff has honestly said that that their goal is to win another world title, and trying out the sprint race instead of the qualifying sessions in order to establish the starting order would hinder them. I totally understand him and I respect his opinion, but at the same time I am sorry that this time he has put his individual interests before our sport.” – Brawn summarized his bitter experiences.
